Exploration Without Compromise.
Striving to protect
the places we
love to explore.
We’re committed to creating the best products on earth,
while working to leave the earth better for future generations.
Sustainable from start to finish.
Nature is at the heart of all we do. It’s why we’ve created four actionable commitments to keep us on the path of sustainability from start to finish. From being more intentional and innovative in the way we create products, to helping you shop sustainably and understand how to take care of and extend the life of your gear, to giving used gear a second life—it’s on us all to help lessen our impact on the places we explore.
Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. This means 87 percent of material used to make clothing ends up as waste. To address this, our first step is to utilize more sustainable materials in the products we create. Ultimately, our goal is to develop circular systems to recycle previously-owned gear and reuse the raw materials, keeping them out of waste streams. And while we currently have initiatives to help keep gear out of landfills, our first products intentionally designed for circularity will launch in 2022.
100% responsibly-sourced apparel fabrics by 2025.
We’ve set an ambitious goal to ensure all products we make are made with recycled, regenerative, organic or responsibly-sourced renewable fabrics—which are fabrics derived from materials that will replenish over the course of a lifetime. We’re on track to hit our goal with all our apparel in 2025, and all footwear and equipment by 2030.
Work in tandem with suppliers and retailers.
We’re committed to working with suppliers to help reduce their environmental footprint too. We’re also partnering with retailers who share both our mission and our values. These efforts will have positive impacts on the industry overall, beyond just The North Face.
Accelerate sustainable packaging.
Our goal is to eliminate single-use plastic packaging by 2025. In the meantime, we’re working to reduce remaining product packaging, and design packaging that is more recyclable. We only use recycled content and/or third-party certified content (such as Forest Stewardship Council certification) for all of our paper materials, like product hangtags and cardboard shipping boxes.
The story behind the badge.
We’ve made it easy to shop our most sustainable products on our website with our “Exploration Without Compromise” badge. To earn the badge, apparel, equipment, and accessories must be made with 75% or greater recycled, organic, regenerative and/or responsibly-sourced renewable materials by weight. If the product has a DWR finish, it must be a non-perfluorinated chemicals (non-PFC) DWR.
